In 2018, Omafume Niemogha had graduated from fashion at the University of Lagos and launched her luxury ethical label, which is nothing less than eccentric, playful and vibrant wearable art. Described as Neo-African

Omafume is passionate about using fashion as a positive tool for social and environmental change, while exploring, advocating and preserving culture and age-old traditional craftsmanship. Described as Neo-African, which draws on Western influence in an otherwise traditional African palette and technique.

Their production techniques include hand-weaving raffia and

using plant-based dyes, woodcarving and hand-painting for bespoke textiles.

Her 2020 SS collection, Afrofuturism, eliminated all scrap waste by repurposing and reinforcing to create motifs on the 3D abstract skirts. Other garments were constructed using recycled synthetic materials that would otherwise go to landfill, like plastics and non-biodegradable material. Aso oke fabric dominates the collection are were handwoven by artisans in a small community in Kwara State. Organic cotton and silks were hand dyed and painted. Adire African prints were used, as seen on the kimono and trouser set and shirt paired with silk and by-product leather.

This label is a stylist’s wardrobe dream! Every garment is sustainably produced and handmade ethically in Lagos, while its materials are sourced from within the continent.

In a very short period of time, Pepper Row has been featured on Beyoncé’s Black Parade Route and photographed by renowned Nigerian photo-journalist, Stephen Tayo.

Pepper Row has a clear vision of training and enabling artisans in local communities (the African artisan industry is valued at $34B annually; the second largest industry to agriculture; and employs a majority of women).

These are the dream garments that we would love to see in Milano for the Green Carpet Awards and too, at the Grammy’s, MET Gala and MTV Awards.
